With the introduction of shopping for online prescription eyewear some years ago, buying new prescription glasses has never been easier or less expensive than it is today. For the most part, choosing your next great pair of glasses is now very simple and, dare we say, quite enjoyable! That is if you have everything you’ll actually need to complete your purchase.
This review features products from partners who compensate us. Therefore, this may influence which products we write about but not our evaluations of them. We take great pride in providing authentic reviews while remaining objective. Our thoughts and opinions are our own.
What You’ll Need Before You Buy
A Valid Eyewear Prescription
First and foremost you will need a valid eyewear prescription (unless purchasing OTC reading glasses), typically less than two years old, from your optometrist. If you don’t have an optometrist or haven’t been to one in a while, you may still be in luck. A few retailers are now offering eye exams online (strictly for prescriptions) through their site or an app. That said, it’s never a bad idea to visit your eye doctor for a full exam every couple of years to make sure you are maintaining your visual health.
Your Pupillary Distance (PD) Measurement
The second most important thing you’ll need is your pupillary distance measurement. This is also called your PD measurement, and despite the official-sounding name, it’s actually rather simple to measure for yourself at home.
Your eye doctor can also provide this for you, though some may not hand the measurement over so easy. After all, you have wisely discovered you can shop for the same designer eyewear online at a fraction of the price compared to the eye-popping prices found in their optical showroom!
Once you have your prescription and PD measurement, you are all set to begin your eyewear shopping journey!
We’ll get right into our top online eyewear picks right after this, but for those looking for more, you can jump below to view our additional online purchasing tips or view our frequently asked questions. Warby Parker burst onto the eyewear scene back in 2010 with their revolutionary free in-home try-on program. Their founders, tired of paying exorbitant costs for glasses caused by the monopoly of an industry giant, set out to produce stylish and affordable frames for the masses. Their in-house design team has churned out dozens of trendy acetate and metal frames which you can try on and purchase from the comfort of your home.

Their black and white approach to eyewear provides a very transparent shopping experience for the end consumer, ultimately simplifying the whole ordeal of purchasing prescription glasses altogether. This is very refreshing, and we wish we could see this more often.
All frames start at $95 and with that include free prescription lenses or standard sun lenses along with a case and lens cloth. Other lenses like high index, progressive, and polarized are available at an increased cost depending on the options chosen.
Ultimately, Warby Parker presents designer style and quality eyewear at a price that is significantly more affordable when compared to the national chains or traditional brick and mortar optical stores.
What We Like
As we mentioned above, Warby Parker’s home-try on program is about as good as it gets when choosing eyewear online. You can take their style quiz or simply browse their abundant frame selection on your own to choose 5 frames for a 5 day in home trial. Best yet, they provide free shipping both ways with no obligation to buy a thing from them!
Should you decide to purchase one or more of the five frames, you tested they’ll send you a fresh pair with standard prescription lenses for $95 a pair. You’ll be hard pressed to find the equivalent quality frames anywhere near this price at your typical brick and mortar optical store. We also want to note that the home try-on also extends to many of their sunglasses as well!
Other options and add-ons include progressive, high index, and polarized lenses which are a huge plus depending on your prescription and overall vision needs. These will add anywhere from $30-$130 more to the cost of the purchase, but if you have a strong prescription you’ll need high index lenses, and theirs are reasonably priced.
All lenses come with anti-reflective, superhydrophobic, and UV protective coatings included in the base cost ($95) of any prescription pair of glasses. Last, all lenses receive a scratch-resistant coating which is guaranteed by Warby Parker for up to a year.
For those of you apprehensive to purchase prescription eyewear online, you’ll have 30-days to make up your mind on your new eyewear where you can return or exchange them hassle-free within that window. If that still isn’t enough to put your mind at ease, you can check out their frames in person by visiting one of their 80 stores located across 29 states. There is even a location in Canada too! There you’ll be able to discuss frames and lens options with their licensed opticians or even have a prescription check done.
The overall packaging and presentation of their frames elevate the online shopping experience to new heights, leaving you with eyewear that feels special when compared to other discount style prescription glasses.
Last, we love Warby Parker’s philanthropic angle, donating a pair of glasses to those in need for every pair sold. Programs like this may appear commonplace amongst retailers these days, but we need more charitable programs like this in the world.
What Needs Some Work
With the home try-on program aging (8 years old now!) and its general overall popularity, some people are starting to experience some quality issues with Warby Parker’s trial frames. Some frames have been shipped out for home trials multiple times, and well-worn examples are simply not being cycled out fast enough at times. Though this appears to be a relatively minor inconvenience to those that have experienced this, it can throw you off a bit when you first open up that fancy Warby Parker box.
We didn’t experienced any well worn frames in our hom try-on kit, but some of our frames had to be bent a little to fit our faces. Again, not too uncommon with any acetate eyewear.
Additionally, the most common complaint comes from the lenses used for their prescription eyewear. This is a tough one to judge because it’s so hard to determine if lens issues arise from quality or abuse. Everyone has different standards of care when it comes to their own glasses, but the issue has come up enough to note. We take solace in their 1-year scratch resistance warranty in regards to this.
Last, we would love to see some discounts made available for students and members of the armed forces. Students have enough debt to worry about, and members of the military put their lives on the line for us, perhaps Warby Parker could throw a little something extra their way.

They sell only their self-branded frames which start at just $6 and go up to $70. Prescription glasses can be had for as little as $12.95 which makes them one of the best values available online today! That said, if you decide to look at their more premium options, we highly recommend you look at their fantastic RFLKT Collection of frames.
RFLKT frames feature Mazzucchelli Italian acetate and high-quality German-made components which means they rival the highest quality frames on the market. Best yet, you can get a RFLKT frame with premium lenses starting at $70 all in!
EyeBuyDirect never did venture into home try-on programs and instead invested heavily into a fantastic, user-friendly website. The sheer amount of product details and high-quality images will not only leave you speechless but will help you come away with a very clear understanding of exactly how your frames should look when you receive them.
Best of all, it’s one of the only places you can find well designed, stylish prescription eyewear for a fraction of the price of typical designer eyewear.
What We Like
To begin, their product and pricing ranges are both incredible and affordable. With multiple tiers of frames and lenses, you will be able to find a great looking pair of prescription glasses for an affordable price no matter the size of your budget. Best yet, they start you right out of the gate with a 15% discount + free shipping (use code WELCOME) on their already low prices, or 20% off for qualified students.
You’ll find just about any type of lens style you can think of available at EuyBuyDirect including single vision, progressive, and bifocal prescription lenses along with polarized, photochromic, and mirrored sunglasses among others. Basically, if a particular lens type or style exists, the folks at EuyBuyDirect likely have it available for you to add to your new frames.
Anti-reflective, UV protective and scratch resistant coatings are available for all lenses, but you’ll have to upgrade to at least polycarbonate lenses to have UV protection included. We recommend going one step further up the lens quality ladder beyond polycarbonate and spending the extra $12-$20 to get into the high index lenses anyways. You can view a break down of different lens types here if you’re interested.
A nice benefit for returning customers is the option to join their loyalty program or utilize their referral program to earn credit towards new glasses.
Their loyalty program costs $99/yr but comes with incredible benefits and discounts like a Buy One, Get One offer, 30% off sunglasses, and many more exclusive offers. Though you would need to purchase multiple pairs of eyewear in a calendar year to truly benefit.
EyeBuyDirect also offers a referral program which is entirely free to join and you can earn cash which can be used for future eyewear purchases. You’ll receive $10 towards new eyewear everytime your family and friends use your unique link to make a qualifying purchase. As a bonus, they’ll give you an extra $50 every time you refer 5 new friends.
As we mentioned, their website is truly amazing and has to be one of the better looking, intuitive e-commerce stores that can be found anywhere online today. Prices are clearly displayed and walking through the process of selecting your frames, lenses, and lens coatings couldn’t be easier.
What Needs Some Work
The prices of their frames and lenses start incredibly low, but leave you with bare bones prescription glasses. If you’re like most people, you will likely desire a little more from your eyewear. Their standard lenses don’t come with an anti-reflective coating and also don’t provide any UV protection. No UV protection on eyewear lenses is always a bad idea, and this could cause some serious adverse side effects down the road if you’re unlucky.
If you are someone that requires a stronger prescription, standard lenses won’t even be a choice for you. You may be forced to choose from the more expensive high index lenses, depending on the strength of your prescription. As we mentioned above, we are big fans of high index lenses, so this is not all that bad to us. However, your costs will start to increase significantly with high index lenses, and you need to know you will get nowhere near their low advertised prices when you checkout.
For example, a strong prescription will push you into the 1.67 and 1.74 high index lenses. The cheapest you can get out the door with anti-reflective, anti-scratch, and UV protection is somewhere between $55 – $100. For that price, we might start to look at the more “premium” online eyewear brands that feature home try-on like Warby Parker, especially at a1.74 high index lens.
Last, we like the 1-year warranty but think the 14-day fit & style guarantee for exchanges or refunds is too short. 14 days just simply isn’t enough time to determine if your glasses and lenses are fitting you correctly, especially when you add in a natural adjustment period.

Who They are
FramesDirect was created and launched all the way back in 1997 by two optometrists looking to build an eyewear business that could run 24/7. To say it has been a success would be a massive understatement. FramesDirect offers one of the most extensive lineups of designer anywhere on the web and at deeply discounted prices to boot!

They are a one-stop shop for designer prescription glasses, sunglasses, reading, glasses and even sunglasses. When purchasing prescription eyewear through their website, you have the option to choose many different lenses, materials, and finishes as well as single vision, progressive, and bifocal lenses.
Frame prices start as low as $40, but the average cost is much higher due to the premium placed on designer labels like Armani, Oakley, Ray-Ban, Gucci, Persol, and Prada, just to name a few. Basic prescription lenses are included in the price of all frames with the option to upgrade to high index or specialty lenses if necessary.
What We Like
Our favorite thing about FramesDirect is their low prices on an incredible number of designer brands and styles. Of course, they have a very different approach to eyewear when compared to Warby Parker, and EyeBuyDirect discussed above, but for those who just want the designer labels they are used to, FramesDirect is one of the few places to shop for authentic designer eyewear.
Their prices will be significantly higher for prescription eyewear compared to other low-cost approaches, but finding designer eyewear at your local optician will still cost you about twice as much.
FramesDirect offers a generous 30-day return or exchange on all eyewear (though lenses are only credited 50% because they can’t be resold) as well as a 1-year warranty on any and all manufacturer’s defects. They also will guarantee your prescription for 30 days. If you can’t seem to adjust to your new lenses or fear the prescription may be incorrect, you can have them replaced for no charge as long as you are in that 30-day window.
Much like many of the upstart eyewear companies, FramesDirect also participates in a buy one give one philanthropic program. They partner with the Essilor Group to donate a pair of glasses for every pair they sell to someone in need.
Last, we love that they offer discounts to the member of the armed forces as well as first responders. The offers and discounts apply to their family members as well which is a nice touch, especially if you have any kids that need glasses.
We almost forgot, on staff opticians are available for phone calls to help you with your purchase or answer any questions you may have regarding frames or lenses.
What Needs Some Work
We can’t really fault them on a higher price for the frames because as they say, ”you have to pay to play” and that’s especially true if you want to wear glasses with a designer label. That said, what we would like to see an improvement on is the cost of the lens.
When not discounted, lens prices are on the high side, but ultimately, reasonably competitive. However, FramesDirect always lists them as a “sale price” which is deeply discounted compared to the actual price they display.
Now, you might think, “great! I love getting a deal!” but this could just be a tactic to make you feel you are getting a deal. If they ever stop discounting their lenses you could expect the final price to skyrocket. It all feels a bit gimmicky, and we would rather just see black and white pricing without fear of any games being played.
Last, their customer experiences seem to be very hit or miss. Half the reviews we find are glowing while the other half leaves a lot to be desired. Again, it’s best to take this with a grain of salt because most people typically leave a review when they are extremely happy or the very upset. It’s also hard to know every individual’s expectations when starting the process but prescription eyewear can take a little time to create depending on the details of your order.
